I had this suspicion that a lot of the outrage about Cambridge Analytica stems from the Channel 4 News undercover filming where they very confidently state “It’s no good fighting an election campaign on the facts because actually it’s all about emotion”
(that video is supposed to start at 7:40 but I have no clue if time stamping works on medium)
The top man of Cambridge is basically calling everyone (regardless of which party they support) emotional creatures, and that’s a bigger insult than “cunt” these days, isn’t it? People think of themselves as rational so calling them emotional gets them really upset…they start throwing tantrums and want to hurt the big bad men that hurt them…
But when I voiced that suspicion I was very quickly put straight — it’s all about laws and breaking terms of service and this very serious concept called “consent” which those men in general treat like it’s holy writ.
Nothing at all to do with emotions.
So yeah, you must be right that people simply didn’t realize, or didn’t care, how much information was being collected and how easily it was to collect. It’s not like there’s an often quoted saying floating around for almost a decade…something like “if you’re not paying for it, you’re the product”
