I understand your worries all too well. Allow me to ease your mind just a little. Unless you were planning on cranking out click bait listacles, or going the completely fictional route, polishing your writing to what you think people will want to read is not going to work. At all.

You can ask around, and most likely people will tell you that the pieces that resonated with readers were the raw, unpolished, had-to-get-this-out things they wrote in under 20 minutes and hit “publish” on before they lost their nerves. That’s as authentic as you can get. I’m not sure if Medium just has a more sensitive audience by design, or if I’ve been underestimating humans before Medium, but we all seem to smell unauthentic from a mile away.

So worry not over that slight tug you feel from the stats. It will self correct pretty damn quick once you notice them dropping because you lost your true voice.
