I’m Weird ( But You Already Knew That)
So, yeah, paying stories with claps. I’m pretty happy with the concept.
Only, how I engage reading material on Medium up till now isn’t very beneficial to the program. You see, if there’s one section of Medium I am likely to skip, it’s member exclusive content. That lock icon on top means I will be much less likely to read it. I have no real reason for it, I just don’t.
Yet, I joined the paid member force as soon as I could. And I have never once regretted joining. I would join again, now knowing what it means. I will continue to be a paying member for the foreseeable future. I just don’t want any of the perks that come with it — and it seems to be a subconscious thing.
When I first read about the pay-for-claps, I was kinda excited. Because I have this $5 and I can spend it on stories how I see fit, and I’ve had pretty long discussions where it’s been pointed out to me how that’s a good and fair system…
Guess what, I didn’t like it then and after thinking about it, I still don’t really like it now. I’d rather pay blind. Does that make sense? I’d rather not be aware which claps are monetized and which arent. Whether or not an author has a deal with Medium to be paid for claps or not, is between the author and the company. I don’t want to know. The knowledge will taint my clapping behavior (I know the author can see how much each ‘fan’’ clapped, but that’s a whole different can of worms) I don’t want to see a lock on the story that tells me I can read it because I can pay for the membership. I don’t want the pressure of knowing which claps will be partly paycheck and which are freebees (encouragement claps?). I just wanna clap for things I read, or not, spontaneously and authentically and move on to the next story.
