To use a comparison, had she been talking about a pain flaring up when she put her weight on her leg, it wouldn’t sound weird if I asked if it’s possible her leg is broken. That happened too you know, friend of mine made a stupid fall hanging up the laundry and complained about a pain like that for weeks. Women have a habit of downplaying whatever ails them. I’ve made it a habit of asking when I pick up on a pattern in language that might indicate a problem. If from ten times asking I come over as rude and obnoxious nine times, I can live with that. Rather than kicking myself (again) for that one time I noticed but didn’t mention.
