Old joke:

“Do you know what Heck is? The place you go to when you don’t believe in Gosh.”

It’s not even the word *smirks*The word is a simple 4 letters. It’s never about the 4 letters. Don’t believe me? Take 2 minutes and 25 seconds to watch this compilation from the Battlestar Gallactica (reboot) it will blow your frakking mind.

Vulgarity is in the intent. You can basically use any combination of letters to draw attention— although, there seems to be something about 4 letters with one vowel, something you can bark, that make a word specially suited for the job.

Most of the people I know who feel offended by cursing, specially those who go out of their way to point out it’s not about morals, are not so much upset by the language but by the intent. The intent of course, is expressing a dissatisfaction with something in a way which everyone agreed upon is not polite. You go out of the way to break the rules of society. This is upsetting to some.
