Multilingual will help Iris, as it has helped me, when she gets a little older. But right now, it’s no big deal. All her peers are if not fluent, then at least able to hold a conversation in English, Spanish, Dutch and the local language of Papiamento. On top of that, a good deal of them can speak French and Portuguese. This is what happens in the Caribbean, where every island has been a colony of a European country at some point, sometimes several — even at the same time. Saint Martin, for instance, is half French and half Dutch.
