I remember catching an episode of some tv show, where a young black lady wanted to stop singing gospel and start singing alternative rock. A older black woman tried to very carefully warn her that rock is a very white dominated genre. To which the young lady nodded, she was aware of that, and then promptly listed 5 black artists who ‘made’ it. They were all male. And I was sitting there thinking. “Yeah, but could you list 5 women in alternative rock, of any race?” It seemed a bigger obstacle to me.
I think you hit the nail on the head, that we get ‘trained’ to be more aware of some problems and less aware of others.
