Wow, I’m sorry to read your father took his reaction to such extremes.
Strangely enough I had something similar but less drastic happen to me. My mother is convinced I am a Satanist. Not the Laveyan kind, which would have been a little more accurate since I did look into Laveyan satanism for a couple of years in my late teens (before deciding it is just as much nonsense as any other religion) but Devil worship.
The reason she thinks so is because I listen to metal music and some years ago she walked by while I was using the computer to search for something on Demonoid (which had a cute green devil logo). When she saw that she said something along the lines of “Oh no, don’t tell me you are getting involved with Demonic things!”
After a second confusion on my side I looked at my screen, laughed, and told her not to worry, I’m just a pirate. I don’t think she understood what I meant with ‘pirate’. She walked off. We never really talked about it again.
But, it seems like she’s still holding this idea about me. This weekend she found something at a garage sale she bought for me. Two goat head (or maybe sheep head) candle holders. And when she gave them to me she said “Isn’t this from that thing you believe in?”
They are pretty cool. And the gesture is so kind I couldn’t even tell her that I don’t believe in anything and on top of that I doubt these candle holders are part of any sort of satanic decor.
She also doesn’t want to hear she’s wrong, but at least she is trying to be accepting. I love her for that.
It’s still kind of crazy how technological ignorance is creating these misconceptions the older generation doesn’t want to let go of. A good lesson for me not to fall in that trap with my kids.
